Breast Cancer and Jewish Women

Did you know?

Jewish women have a greater propensity for certain kinds of breast cancer due to the prevalence of alterations in the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes that one in 40 Jewish women of Ashkenazi and Eastern European descent carry. Carriers of this alteration are three to seven times more likely to develop breast cancer before the age of 50.

Talk To Your Doctor About It. Increased screening and/or genetic counseling are two ways to help address this elevated risk – and both can help save lives.

Partners in Haiti Relief Making Progress: Need Still Great

The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle is partnering with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to direct and provide aid to Haiti after the devastating earthquake. Our hearts go out to all who have lost a loved one and who are in dire need of medical, food, emotional and other ongoing support.

We urge you to donate to the JDC Haiti Relief Fund. Recent federal legislation allows you to take any Haiti donations as a 2009 tax deduction if you wish.

For days, the only operating room in Haiti was that of the Israeli Field Hospital. Read more.

Our State Budget Presents a Huge Challenge

In a short, sixty day session, anything is possible. But erasing the need for drastic cuts to health and human services may very well be a lost cause.

So much is at stake for low-income people and community agencies like Jewish Family Service and the Kline Galland. Lend your voice to solutions to keep our Jewish community, and Washington State, safe and strong. Join the Washington State Jewish Action Center to stay up-to-date and take action on legislative and policy happenings in Olympia, WA and Washington, DC.

The 2010 legislative session presents challenges for the Jewish community and our legislative priorities. To balance Washington’s budget and erase an almost $3.0 billion deficit, Governor Chris Gregoire’s proposed budget made deep cuts into critical programs

As Seen in The Seattle Times: Homeless Woman Bent on Giving

Today’s column by Nicole Brodeur in The Seattle Times is a touching true story of a local, Jewish homeless woman who exemplifies tzedakah.

Homeless herself, and parentless after her parents were killed in the Holocaust, this woman recently came to Jewish Family Service to make a donation, not for services she could have used. Instead, she wanted to fulfill a promise she had made with her sister before she died about giving to “God’s people,” the people of Israel. And so her donation of $840, from rolled up bills in various bags, was directed to the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle for our work with immigrants in Kiryat Malachi, Israel.

What a story of generosity, selflessness and partnership especially apropos during this season of thanks. Donate Now.

Super Sunday a Smash Hit

Yesterday, over 100 volunteers from across the community turned out to help the Jewish Federation at Super Sunday.

Community-wide organizational leaders, UW AEPi fraternity members, Seattle newcomers and regular volunteers crowded the Stroum Jewish Community Center’s auditorium where the phones were busy all day.

At Super Sunday, the sound of the grogger was a good thing—another gift had been made. At the end of the day, $230,000 from more than 400 generous donors was pledged to the Community Campaign. And 30 people donated blood and 18 signed up for the Bone Marrow Registry through the Puget Sound Blood Center.

You can still add to the community success. Donate Now.
