Our TIPS Partnership with Israel

For more than twelve years, the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle has had an important partnership with two communities in southern Israel, Kiryat Malachi and Hof Ashkelon.

Do you want to participate in hands-on community service, work on a committee, focus on Israel or contact newcomers to our community? Are you looking for an internship or an afternoon of volunteer projects?

We have many volunteer opportunities available and can help match your interests with engaging volunteer options, both at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and at other Jewish nonprofits in the Puget Sound area.

Jewish Federation Partners With Disney's Volunteerism Promotion

The Jewish Federation has teamed up with Disney to be an official partner of the “Give A Day, Get A Day” program. See the related article in The Seattle Times. The first one million people across the country who give a day of service will receive a free, one-day pass to a Disney park. We have many exciting volunteer opportunities available for kids, teens and adults of all ages.

Volunteer Spotlight: Nadia Hecker-O'Brien

Amidst tutoring, soccer and the otherwise busy life of an active teen, Nadia Hecker-O'Brien also manages to find time to be the regional president of Seattle's BBYO organization—and a volunteer at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle. Currently a senior at Garfield High School, Nadia lives with her family in the Leschi/Madrona area.

Connections Attendees: "Best Speaker Ever"

Alina Gerloving Spaulding, our Connections speaker, really hit a nerve.

  • “Today, as I was sobbing in the parking lot, I realized that for the first time, this event meant something; it really connected for me. The story that Alina told was my story but a lot less dramatic. You know how something that is part of your own life is ingrained that you never really reflect on it because it is such a part of you? Today, as I heard this story through Alina's eyes, I realized that everything that I have in my life is owed to the fact that there was a Jewish agency willing to help my parents get a visa and get out of Poland.”

Another attendee explained, “This was the best event I have ever attended. I was so moved, so proud to support the Jewish Federation. And I couldn’t wait to make another gift so I could help Jews overseas in need.”

  • "Thank you very much for a well organized and informative event. This is my first time at the Jewish Federation event in Seattle. I was pleased to see such a big community and willingness to make a difference in the world."

These were the types of sentiments heard in the halls, bathroom and ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Bellevue after Alina spoke. It was moving as she detailed her family’s journey from the former Soviet Union to New Jersey, with the help of the American Jewish community every step of the way.

Partners in Haiti Relief Making Progress: Need Still Great

The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle is partnering with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to direct and provide aid to Haiti after the devastating earthquake. Our hearts go out to all who have lost a loved one and who are in dire need of medical, food, emotional and other ongoing support.

We urge you to donate to the JDC Haiti Relief Fund. Recent federal legislation allows you to take any Haiti donations as a 2009 tax deduction if you wish.

For days, the only operating room in Haiti was that of the Israeli Field Hospital. Read more.

As Seen in The Seattle Times: Homeless Woman Bent on Giving

Today’s column by Nicole Brodeur in The Seattle Times is a touching true story of a local, Jewish homeless woman who exemplifies tzedakah.

Homeless herself, and parentless after her parents were killed in the Holocaust, this woman recently came to Jewish Family Service to make a donation, not for services she could have used. Instead, she wanted to fulfill a promise she had made with her sister before she died about giving to “God’s people,” the people of Israel. And so her donation of $840, from rolled up bills in various bags, was directed to the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle for our work with immigrants in Kiryat Malachi, Israel.

What a story of generosity, selflessness and partnership especially apropos during this season of thanks. Donate Now.

Super Sunday a Smash Hit

Yesterday, over 100 volunteers from across the community turned out to help the Jewish Federation at Super Sunday.

Community-wide organizational leaders, UW AEPi fraternity members, Seattle newcomers and regular volunteers crowded the Stroum Jewish Community Center’s auditorium where the phones were busy all day.

At Super Sunday, the sound of the grogger was a good thing—another gift had been made. At the end of the day, $230,000 from more than 400 generous donors was pledged to the Community Campaign. And 30 people donated blood and 18 signed up for the Bone Marrow Registry through the Puget Sound Blood Center.

You can still add to the community success. Donate Now.
