Bashert is the LGBTQ Initiative of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle. Bashert reaches out to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender and questioning Jews in Greater Seattle in order to build a stronger, more inclusive Jewish community. This initiative creates opportunities for Jews to come together, celebrate and explore their Jewish identities in a welcoming environment.
As we learned more details about the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle extended its deepest condolences to the families impacted by this tragedy.
The Jewish Federations of North America, our umbrella organization, has issued this statement regarding the Sikh Temple shooting over the weekend. As you may know, JFNA has been the leading organization behind the Nonprofit Security Grant Program which is aimed at helping vulnerable nonprofits prepare for a terrorist attack.
Even though Chelsea had her Bat Mitzvah the year before, inside she was still scared and confused and not ready to be the woman everyone expected her to be. Uncomfortable in her own skin and unsure of her place in the world, she would retreat for hours at a time. That is, until her family's Seder in 2003. "I drank four full cups—and for the first time, there was silence in my head. I wanted that feeling of peace all the time."
SAFE Washington, a Mark Bloome initiative, is a partnership program of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and other entities that offers the following services:
- Provide a robust communications network to the Jewish community via the Northwest Warning Alert and Response Network, Homeland Security Information Network, and the Secure Communities Network. Free of charge, this network is used to alert participating agencies of imminent threats, dangers and response protocol in real time.
- Develop best practices for disaster response, community security and community preparedness and provide low cost and/or no cost training for community partners through annual training events.
- Provide increased opportunities and leverage existing federal grant funding of community programs
