Call for Jewish Community Heroes Campaign Nominations

The 2nd Jewish Community Heroes Campaign sponsored by the Jewish Federations of North America is coming up soon. This national online campaign raised the profile of hundreds of community members across the country doing amazing things for the Jewish and greater community. Seattle's own Margot Kravette almost made the top twenty! To help jump start the campaign, we invite you to submit to us your local Jewish community hero. Please submit to KevinN@JewishInSeattle.org.

An Increase in Funds Heads Overseas To Aid Jews In Need, including Holocaust Survivors

Holocaust survivors are struggling in many parts of the world, including Israel. (See The Seattle Times’ July 8 article “Holocaust survivors’ poverty…”)

The weak economy world-wide has heightened their and other poor Jews’ struggles as governments decrease benefits and services and, in some places, political unrest has escalated. The economy has also affected charitable giving on which thousands rely for food baskets, prescription medication, home visits and community centers, paid for by Jewish communities in North America and Europe.

Join us on the evening of April 28 at the "7th Inning Stretch Phone-a-Thon" for our 2010 Community Campaign. We need to raise another $1.8 million just to continue the services we fund. If we do not reach our goal, our agencies, programs and recipients will suffer. Our Jewish community will suffer. We cannot let this happen – too many people in the world are counting on us.

RSVP now.

As volunteers make calls, we will be raffling off some great prizes including Mariner's tickets!

Ruz Gulko - Sexuality and Marriage in Judaism
Judaism is unique among the world’s “great religions” in regard to sexuality. We understand the physical body as endowed with its own sanctity, and indeed, sex as a God-given gift. Marriage is seen as the optimal condition for humankind: “It is NOT GOOD for humans to be alone.” (Genesis 2). Would you believe there are even love-making instructions for men in the Talmud?

Overseas Needs

Help support the elderly and other members of our extended Jewish family in need overseas by contributing to the Community Campaign.

About miranda

In a crumbing building in downtown Tbilisi, Georgia, lives an old Jewish woman who was once married to the most gifted piano player in Eastern Europe. But that was a long time ago, when raising their family and running their jazz club were priorities and survival was a given.

Amidst tutoring, soccer and the otherwise busy life of an active teen, Nadia Hecker-O'Brien also manages to find time to be the regional president of Seattle's BBYO organization—and a volunteer at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle. Currently a senior at Garfield High School, Nadia lives with her family in the Leschi/Madrona area.
