A Note from Richard: JFS Dedicates Renovated Food Bank

Congratulations to Jewish Family Service, who on Sunday, March 7, dedicated their recently renovated food bank on Capitol Hill. The expansion, funded by a $500,000 federal stimulus package grant, allows JFS to grow its neighborhood food bank to serve low-income families and seniors of all backgrounds more thoroughly from Downtown Seattle to the Madison Valley. Additionally, the expansion will increase the capacity of JFS to store and deliver food by as much as 100%, reducing or eliminating the current need for off-site warehousing and related transportation costs.

Accepting Donations for Chile Earthquake Victims

Our hearts go out to the people of Chile in the wake of the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the region on Saturday. In response, the Jewish Federation is partnering with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) to collect funds for relief efforts.

JDC provides technical assistance to many Latin American countries including Chile. As they have done recently in Haiti, they will leverage strong partnerships in the region, including the local Chilean Jewish community, to provide a quick and effective response to the needs of those affected.

We are receiving up-to-the-minute reports from JDC's Latin America team on the ground; they are conducting a full and rapid assessment of the situation by working closely with Chile's Jewish community to determine critical next steps based on immediate needs of the hardest-hit areas, which also include the impact of the earthquake on the Jewish community.

Responding to the Haiti Disaster: An Update

Following the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, Jewish Federation-supported JDC swiftly coordinated relief efforts with its network of Israeli, American and local Haitian partners on the ground. With your support more than $5.5 million was raised to aid the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Please see this brief video that highlights JDC's work in Haiti.

Faith Prevails for Jewish High School Basketball Team

We would like to say a hardy Mazel Tov to the girls basketball team at Northwest Yeshiva, an Orthodox Jewish high school of about 95 students on Mercer Island, for being the first Jewish school in Washington history to qualify for a state basketball tournament. Equally impressive is the stand you have taken by not competing on the fast of Esther, the day before Purim. You have shown your true colors and are an example to athletes, girls and boys, and religious people everywhere. Read the story in the Yakima Herald.
