Dear Friends,
In recent days we’ve been holding our collective breath for what has seemed impossible—news of a ceasefire-hostage deal. Today, 467 days after October 7 — the single worst attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust — there is meaningful progress for the safe and swift return of all hostages.
In response to news outlets confirming a deal is moving forward, Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA) just released the following statement:
Jewish Federations welcome news of a deal to release dozens of hostages, create a framework for releasing all the hostages, and allow Israel a path forward to protect the safety and security of its citizens.
Every day for over 15 months, our community has held the hostages in our hearts, wept for their plight, prayed for their safe return, and mourned for those who we lost.
We’ve held close our Israeli brothers and sisters who have suffered, been displaced, fought in reserves, struggled to keep their businesses afloat, and worked to keep their families and communities alive.
There is much work to be done and significant uncertainty ahead, but we are hopeful that the first phase of this agreement will pave the way for the remaining hostages to be reunited with their family, for hostilities to end, and for an era of security and rebuilding for both Israel and her neighbors.
We must also thank President Biden and President-elect Trump, for their unprecedented coordination to bring both sides together to get a deal done.
While this agreement is still unfolding, for the families of those taken — and for all of us who have prayed for their safe return — today’s announcement brings cautious hope. It also marks a critical step toward peace and safety for all those who have suffered.
Over the last 15 months, the impact of this war has been felt greatly in our local community as we’ve experienced a rise in antisemitism in our schools, workplaces, and communities. While much on the path ahead may be uncertain, hopefully, today’s news can help us build a future in the Puget Sound Region that rejects hate, embraces empathy, and builds understanding.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and the Federation system as a whole have played a vital role in supporting those in need, collectively raising nearly $1 billion for victims of terror and rebuilding efforts. Our work to heal and rebuild is far from over. We will keep you informed on developments and continue our efforts to bring aid and comfort to those in need.
L’shalom,
