As we have shared previously, the past year at the University of Washington has been deeply troubling. Many Jewish and Israeli students, faculty, and staff experienced harassment, intimidation, and a hostile environment.
Yesterday, the University of Washington (UW) released the final reports, findings, and recommendations from the task forces on antisemitism and Islamophobia that were announced midway through last school year.
The Jewish Federation, our partners at UW Hillel and Chabad, and thousands of community members have been asking UW to complete and release these reports. The fact that they are now public illustrates the power of a strong community and the critical role the Federation plays in bringing people together to catalyze meaningful action.
But our work is far from over.
While the findings of the antisemitism report show a diversity of experiences among Jewish and Israeli students and faculty, we recognize that not all Jewish experiences are reflected therein. That said, the report found that antisemitism at UW is “widespread, systemic, and institutionalized” and much work is yet to be done to create a safe and inclusive campus. We welcome the task force’s recommendations, especially those that mirror our previous requests, including rigorous enforcement of the University’s code of conduct; implementing time, place, and manner restrictions that ensure that all members of the campus community can participate freely without facing hostility or intimidation based on their identity; and the development of antisemitism education.
The Federation will continue to monitor the situation closely, partner with organizations on campus, step into a leadership role when necessary, and advocate for Jews and Israelis on campus who do not feel safe, included, or able to show up as their full selves.
Thank you for your ongoing support,
